I have sensed many Armenians’ sentiment of feeling disregarded by the global community when the Armenian-inhabited region of Nagorno-Karabakh got invaded by Azerbaijan in 2020. People feel as if our humanitarian crisis, local war crimes and destruction of our cultural heritage are insignificant to the rest of the world. Secondly, as conflicting our interests might be, individuals would want to live in peace. There is a need for a platform that allows dialogue to happen based on mutual understanding.
The Solution
Those affected by war need to have a platform to share their stories and help each other recover from trauma. While many are reluctant to seek professional help, the interaction with others with similar experiences around the world could make them feel less alone. Intercultural compassion could have the power to shift people’s perceptions into realizing that the real enemy is war itself.
